HOT DESERT NIGHTS  -  Joshua Tree National Park, CA

I found this old Joshua tree standing tall and straight and mostly alone in this otherworldly landscape, and he was the subject I’d been seeking.  Something about him spoke of permanence, and that was just the irony I wanted.

While the Joshua tree stood unwavering, the stars above traced their silent arcs through the night sky.  Yet, the scene was deceiving.  In truth, it was our planet that spun, carrying with it the illusion of a steadfast landscape against the backdrop of ever-moving stars.

This "ancient" tree, hundreds of years old, was a mere blink compared to the ancient starlight that had journeyed light-years to reach my eyes. His gnarled branches, weathered and enduring, whispered of time's passing. The stars, millions of years old and destined to outlast all terrestrial things, reminded me of the impermanence woven into every thread of existence.

Beneath the celestial dance of star trails, the irony was clear; the very constancy we seek in these old landscapes is an illusion crafted by the endless movement of our world through time and space.  For nothing endures forever, not even the fleeting thoughts of a nocturnal photographer on a hot desert night.
